North Philadelphia, also known as North Philly, is a section of Philadelphia in the U.S. It is located north of Center City. North Philadelphia is regarded as everything north of either Spring Garden Street or Vine Street between Northwest Philadelphia and Northeast Philadelphia. North Philadelphia was little more than a collection of agricultural townships above the original City of Philadelphia before the incorporation into the city proper. The pastoral North Philadelphia became an attractive alternative to the burgeoning city in the 18th century as Philadelphia grew in population and importance. North Philadelphia is one of the sections of the city having the landscape most deeply shaped by the industrial era. Its landscape still reflects this heritage. The city became a working man’s town after the industrial age peaked in America. Factories and industrial complexes were constructed. Thousands of homes were constructed to house the flourishing worker population. Passenger rail lines were built at the newly constructed North Broad Street Station. The establishment of BSL made the region a hub of transportation. For years, North Philadelphia station remained the second most heavily trafficked rail station. Few remnants of this prosperous era still remain. But many buildings have collapsed from demolition or neglect and thousands lie abandoned.
